Dubbing
The  dubbing loop is a good way to build a solid and robust body, but using one is a bit tricky;  the loop is hanging down the hook and placing the dubbing within sometimes difficult. Commercial dubbing bloc are on the market today but they cannot be used together with your vise. So I have designed a small dubbing bloc, which come in contact with the hook ,  the regular thread is controlled and placing the dubbing is easy.
  Building the bloc : Piece of wood, thickness 1 to 2cm (0,5 to 1"),  25cm (10") of a wooden rod, 1cm (0,5") diameter, pins.
Cut a 6x10cm (2,5x4") rectangle, trace 2  paralleles lines at  2 and 4cm from the longer side. Drill four 1mm (1/25th inch) holes A, B, C, et D to half depth of the wood ( do not drill through), at 0,5cm  (1/5th inch) from the small side edge.. Then drill the same 4 holes 1, 2, 3 et 4. With these 8 holes, you can  dub 8 or 4cm (3,5 or 2") loops.
On the other side , in the center, drill a hole the same diameter as the rod, there again, do not drill through .
For the foot, cut a 10x10cm (4x4"), drill a hole for the rod., assemble the bloc, rod and foot. Put pins in the A, B, C and D holes..
Add two pins  E and F on one side see second photo on the right.
Set the vise at the same height, put a hook, wrap the thread . Put the bloc in position, the A,C side  near the hook. Unwind the thread, place it in contact with pins A, B.
Place it under pin E, then over pin F let the bobbin hang from pin F.
Hang the dubbing twister on the thread.  Now the thread is flat on the bloc and ready.
Sparse dubbing fibers in a flat thin mat, place it over the thread between pins A and B. Take the bobbin and make the loop over the dubbing : the thread is around pin E (the twister is hanging there)  and in contact with pins B, A, C.
The twister hang to the thread by its 2 hooks under pin E. Remove pin E.
The twister still hanging, make a few turns, then, keeping the tension lift the thread from the bloc, the dubbing starts to twist and the loop tighten.
Put the bobbin back on the hook, remove the bloc, let the loop and the twister hang from the hook shank. Twist them both until you get a good looking dubbing rope.

Wrap the loop on the hook and keep tying your fly.

With the bloc, you have at all time, full control of the thread and the dubbing.

Now go to the next page to do the same but with split thread.
