bandeau_vert_texte_56_q30.jpg (5260 octets)
Having put, ephemera larvae ( swimming, baetis) in a small aquarium, one evening, I was lucky enough to watch and photograph, the birth of a fly.     Below are the steps of a successfull emergence.
Several times, this larvae , undulating the abdomen, went up to the surface, then , with spreads legs, sank to the bottom .But at last, it stayed in the surface and then, emerged! Left, seen from below (with the surface mirror effect ). Right, from the top, the folded wings are the 2 black spots .
Left, the skin from the thorax open and on the right the fly emerge
The fly and the nymph skin got separated.
  The skin is slowly sinking

The fly seen from the top, the wings start to unfold
The wings are unfolded, but still wrinkled .
Afloat on the surface the dun will soon take wings.
Emerging is a dangerous step for a tiny fly, in the following page, you'll see the risks associated.
